Definition
Morton's neuroma is a compressive neuropathy of the interdigital nerve, frequently found between the third and fourth toes, usually in response to irritation, trauma or excessive pressure.
Symptoms
Patients suffer from burning pain (especially when wearing shoes) and numbness in the toes.
Tight narrow shoes and high-heeled shoes aggravate the condition
Risk Factors
People who have bunions, hammertoes, high arches or flatfeet are at higher risk of developing Morton's neuroma
Differential diagnosis
Similar pathologies may present similar symptoms and should be eliminated : MTP synovitis, metatarsalgia, Stress fracture, MTPJ arthritis, Metatarsal head osteonecrosis
Treatment
Medical treatment consist of shoe changing, orthosis, steroid injection.
Surgery can resect a small portion of the nerve or release the tissue around the nerve, and generally involves a short recovery period.
